A brief history of Roundup
The active substance called glyphosate was first synthesised in 1950 by a small Swiss pharmaceutical company. Subsequent deals brought the substance to Monsanto, where it was tested as a candidate for a water softener. Eventually, chemist John E. Franz discovered its herbicidal action, which led to the patenting of glyphosate and its launch in 1974 under the name 'Roundup®'. Since 1974, a series of broad-spectrum herbicides have been sold under the Roundup brand name and are used both in agriculture and by hobby gardeners in more than 130 countries Broad-spectrum herbicides have non-specific effects on a wide variety of plant species.Until 2000. Roundup was manufactured and licensed by the inventor and patent holder Monsanto, which became part of Bayer AG in June 2018 as a result of an acquisition.
